Chairul Tanjung at Young

Chairul Tanjung already started his business since he was in college at the faculty of dentistry, University of Indonesia (UI). In his first year in college, he sold everything, ranging from accessories, stickers, keychains, textbooks, and so on, to his student friends. Until then he got the idea when he crossed the stairs to the second floor in his campus. Under the stairs there is an empty space unused, a.k.a dead space. He then thought: the empty space was narrow, but that does not mean not to be used at all.

He then had an idea to make the space as a photocopy shop. Why do students have to go far outside the campus to copy their lesson documents if they can do on campus? He contacted the head of faculty, and he finally could open a photocopy shop in the empty space under the stairs of campus. He does not bought the copier by himself, but in cooperation with other parties. This brilliant idea eventually had made Chairul as 'campus photocopy entrepreneur', and Chairul started getting regular income from his such business.

Chairul's idea to utilize the empty space under the stairs, indirectly has opened new employment opportunities for the next students of the university. Currently, almost all empty space under the stairs on UI campus in Depok nd Salemba, now has been used with various types of businesses such as photocopies, food stalls, mini bookstore, etc., which are run by students.

After graduation, Chairul released his photocopy business and then open a dental supply store in the area of Senen, Central Jakarta. His efforts did not go smoothly. The reason was because the store is often changing its function to be the headquarters of the gathering of student and alumni activists, because Chairul was a person who is very active in student activities. The presence of fellow activists in the shop makes Chairul could not concentrate on building his shop. The store only lasted for a year, and then closed. That's when Chairul realize that: a business that related to the campus, could not run outside the campus.

Its failure does not make young Chairul discouraged. He then carries on business of contractor of factory building constructions. His efforts had smoothly until then a failure hit again. When he got one chopstick factory construction projects, suddenly the project owner had cancel the project unilaterally for no apparent reason, though these chopsticks factory was nearing the completion. Chairul got confused, what would I have to do with this building?

That's when his Japanese acquaintance, suggested Chairul to change the chopsticks factory to a children shoes factory. The reason, because the export market of children shoes had a bright future prospects. Armed with the relationship with the Japanese, Chairul finally had establish his shoes factory, and then exports its products to Japan and other Asian countries.

In 1987, at the age of 25 years, Chairul Tanjung formally established PT Para Inti Holtindo, 'The company', producer and exporter of children's shoes. It was a small companies which is the forerunner of the Para Group, and then became the CT Corporation at present day. CT is initial of his name, Chairul Tanjung.
