Forbes on CT, How Accurate?

Today, Forbes announces the latest list of richest people in the world. Chairul Tanjung had get into big 1,000 richest person in the world, exactly at the 937th rank. In Indonesia itself, Chairul occupies 7th rank, with a net assets worth of U.S.$ 1 billion. A significant improvement for the Rising Star. In December last year, Chairul had ranked 13th of the richest man in Indonesia. The first position of the richest man in Indonesia, is still occupied by Budi Hartono, the owner of Djarum Group.

According to Yosef Ardi, a senior business journalist and the owner of the economic news online office 'Indonesia Today', in an interview with BBC Indonesia, he said, "They (Forbes) made the list based on the market capitalization value of the company's stocks owned by conglomerates that are listed at the stock exchange. Outside it was not counted because it may be difficult to calculate. Thus, the value of wealth of Budi Hartono that reach U.S.$ 3.5 billion, calculated from the portion of ownership he had in the Bank BCA, which was 50%, where the value of market capitalization of BCA currently reached approximately U.S.$ 13.9 billion. Ownership of other assets such as the Djarum tobacco company and the Mall of Grand Indonesia, might not be counted, because the two companies are not listed on the IDX."

Maybe that's why, from the seven Indonesian businessmen who entered the list of the big 1,000 of richest people in the world, there were no names such as Tommy Winata, owner of Artha Groups, or Yusuf Merukh, the king of mines from Eastern Indonesia, or Eddy Katuari, owner of the Wings Group. These entrepreneurs are not listing their companies into the IDX, but only some of those. Aburizal Bakrie? He's still rich. But only, his 'seven brothers' stock prices in the IDX were dropped substantially in the past few months, so he's out of list.

What about Chairul Tanjung? Chairul has two main assets: Bank Mega and Trans TV. So far, only Bank Mega which is already registered in IDX. In the third quarter 2009, Chairul through PT Mega Corpora has 55.7% of total shares of Bank Mega. Today, the Bank Mega traded at the level of Rp 2.450 per share. At that price, Bank Mega has market capitalization of Rp 7.8 trillion, or about U.S.$ 847 million. Thus, Chairul's wealth derived from the Bank Mega is worth around U.S.$ 472 million.

However, Bank Mega's stocks in the IDX were not liquid, so its market capitalization value could not be completely determined by its stock price, but also by the actions of acquisitions made by the company. Currently, Chairul was very diligent to do the acquisition, including through the Bank Mega. Therefore, Bank Mega probably has market capitalization more than U.S.$ 847 million, might be U.S.$ 1 billion. The latest report of the ownership registration which was released by the company, showed that Chairul has raised his portion of shares ownership to about 65%. Thus, Chairul wealth derived from the Bank Mega is not worth U.S.$ 472 million, but about U.S.$ 650 million.

How is the wealth value of Chairul Tanjung derived from Trans TV? Since Trans TV has not been listed on IDX, not much financial information that can be known from this one of the largest television station in Indonesia. However, some observers believe that the Trans TV has a market capitalization of roughly equivalent or slightly above the Surya Citra Televisi (SCTV), another Indonesian largest television station. Parent company of SCTV, Surya Citra Media (SCMA), is listed on IDX. SCMA traded today on the level of Rp 850 per share. At that price, SCMA has market capitalization of Rp 1.6 trillion, or about U.S.$ 177 million. So, let just say that Trans TV has a little higher value than SCTV which was U.S.$ 177 million, and Chairul has 100% stake in Trans TV. Then the total wealth of Chairul Tanjung from Trans TV is roughly about U.S.$ 200 million.

Thus, Chairul Tanjung's wealth derived from the Bank Mega and Trans TV is about U.S.$ 850 million. Chairul also has another bank, Bank Mega Syariah, and another television station, Trans 7 (51% stake). So if accumulated, Chairul wealth from ownership of these two banks and two television stations, the likelihood is above U.S.$ 1 billion.

That value was only derived from the business of banks and television stations. In addition, through his financial services business unit, Chairul has two insurance companies, a stock market brokerage firm, and three financial services companies. Through the media, and lifestyle business unit, Chairul has a tour & travel service company, a fashion company, three F&B companies, a retail company, an airline company, and two entertainment companies. Through his property business unit, Chairul has five property companies. And through his new business units in the field of energy & plantations, Chairul has eight companies. How much would the total value of the entire company, plus Bank Mega, Bank Syariah Mega, Trans TV and Trans 7? Obviously, larger than U.S.$ 1 billion. So it was not without reason if Chairul Tanjung ever claimed that CT Corporation had total assets of about U.S.$ 2 billion.

Even so, that doesn't means Chairul shalt ranked higher on the list, because the six Indonesian conglomerates whose were above Chairul, their assets are also counted in the same way, so that their total assets were likely greater than that displayed by Forbes.

Considering he was only 47 years old (the youngest of the seven), Chairul Tanjung still has big chance to become the richest man in Indonesia. Perhaps his only rival is Martua Sitorus, founder and owner of Wilmar International, the largest CPO trading and plantation company in Asia (and perhaps the world), which became the second richest man in Indonesia, and the 316th richest in the world. Wilmar Intl. which is listed on the SGX, has a market capitalization of about U.S.$ 40.1 billion, outstanding! However Martua had only about 7% stake there.

Martua was only 50 years old. Chairul himself, has began trying to 'interfere' Martua business by establishing several CPO plantation companies in Kalimantan.
